Why Should We Listen When God Says 'Be Not Afraid?'

One of the most common phrases found in scripture is some variation of "Be not afraid," "Do not be afraid," or "Do not fear." But just hearing that doesn't make us stop being scared of things. In this Just 5 More Minutes video, Mike Landry leans on the story of the Annunciation to help us see some the deeper meaning behind those words.

Landry: Understanding God's Love

Whether you first heard it at Church or from a Veggie Tales movie, you've likely heard at some point that God loves you. This is one of the most fundamental beliefs in all of Christianity.

In this "Just Five More Minutes" video, Mike Landry explains a little of what that actually means for us in our day-to-day life.

Landry: God helps us when we struggle
It can be a struggle for all of us to do the right thing or stay true to our faith. When we look for inspiration from the Bible, we might be discouraged when we read how the Israelites and disciples also struggled to do the right thing. But in much the same way as a high-end draft pick can change the course of a sports franchise, God has someone to send to our aid: the Holy Spirit.

A Person is a Person is a Person
Evergreen Catholic Schools chaplain Mike Landry was presented with a moral dilemma. Students asked if he would purposely injure a player on an opposing team if it meant winning a championship? His answer was easy: "Not a chance."

The reason comes from a proper understanding of what the Church talks about as the "dignity of the human person.”

Just Five More Minutes: Is Jesus God?
When we talk about Jesus being God, people sometimes get confused. Is Jesus the Son of God, or is Jesus GOD? (Spoiler: the answer to this is 'yes.')

In this week's video, Mike Landry explains how we believe that Jesus is, in fact God, and what that means for our faith.

What does A.D. really mean?

Many of us, young and old alike, see the letters “AD” around a year, and assume it means “after death.”

This week’s video explains what A.D. actually stands for: Anno Domini – Latin for “in the year of the Lord… and then, what does it mean to say that this year – that all of time – is the Lord’s?

Chronicle of C.S. Lewis

C.S. Lewis is one of Mike Landry's favorite authors. Lewis' faith is found both in his famous fiction (the Chronicles of Narnia) and non-fiction work alike.

Not born into a Catholic family, Lewis converted to Christianity from atheism later in life. Why? Why would anyone become a Christian and choose to follow Jesus?

This week's video takes a look at some of the reasons.

Video: What exactly does the Pope do?

Here's Mike Landry's latest “Just Five More Minutes” video – a look at what, exactly, the Pope does, explained using the various titles
we use to address the leader of the Catholic Church.

The video can be found at: https://youtu.be/hpn7scJTw20

Some potential questions for reflection:

  1. When you think of the Catholic Church, who is the first person that comes to your mind?
  2. When you hear that the Pope is meant to be a “bridge builder,” what do you think he could do to build a bridge to young people today?
  3. During the time he led the Church, Pope St. John Paul II said of young people (of you)

“You are the future of the world; you are the hope of the Church. You are my hope.” In what way do you think young people can be “hope” for the Church?

Video: If God is Love, How can Hell Exist?

Mike Landry says it's a lot easier to talk about heaven than it is to talk about hell.

What do you know about Hell? Is there a specific place in your life that you know God wants you to do something or choose something, but you find it difficult to listen or follow?

Video: Is Heaven boring?

Mike Landry says there are many people who when they think of Heaven imagine it as a pretty boring place...but the testimony of Scripture and our own life experiences point toward an experience of Heaven that is far greater than anything you have experienced (or could even imagine.)

This week's "Just Five More Minutes" dives into how we can understand a little more about Heaven and how it really won't be boring at all.

Video: Why Do We Need The Church?

If our faith is all about Jesus (it is), why do we need a Church to help us know and understand Him?

Mike Landry explains how what we believe about the Church - that it is ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC, and APOSTOLIC - helps us better appreciate why Jesus left us the Church in the first place.
